Serpentine Belts in Sacramento
The serpentine belt runs your alternator, water pump, power steering and air conditioning. When it goes you lose charging and usually cooling at the same time — which turns a cheap belt into an overheated engine on the shoulder of Highway 99.
I replace serpentine belts, automatic tensioners and idler pulleys. A belt that keeps squealing or shredding is often not the belt's fault — a failing tensioner or a seizing idler bearing misaligns it and eats belts. Replacing just the belt in that situation buys you a few months.
Belts get inspected properly rather than by eye. Modern EPDM belts do not crack the way old neoprene belts did; they wear down in the rib grooves instead, and they can look perfectly fine while being well past their service life. A belt wear gauge tells you the truth in about thirty seconds.
Tensioner health gets checked with the engine running — excessive arm flutter means the internal damper is worn out, even if the belt itself is new.

How long does a serpentine belt last?
Typically 60,000 to 100,000 miles on a modern EPDM belt. They rarely look bad before they fail, which is why a wear gauge matters more than a visual check.
Can I keep driving with a squealing belt?
Briefly and carefully. Squealing means slipping, and a slipping belt is not fully driving your alternator or water pump. If the battery light comes on or the temperature gauge climbs, stop driving — at that point the belt is failing, not just noisy.
Why did my new belt start squealing again?
Almost always a worn tensioner or a seized idler pulley. The belt is the symptom. I check the tensioner and idlers before replacing a belt so you are not paying for the same job twice.
How long does the job take?
Usually under an hour for a belt alone. Add time if the tensioner or pulleys are being replaced, or on transverse engines with tight access.
