Valve Cover Gaskets in Sacramento
A leaking valve cover gasket is the burning-oil smell you notice at a stop light. Left alone it fills the spark plug wells with oil, which causes misfires, and it drips onto hot exhaust, which is a genuine fire risk on an older vehicle.
I replace valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals and grommets, and the PCV valve where it is part of the cover assembly. The mating surfaces get cleaned properly, RTV goes on only at the specific corners the manufacturer calls for, and the bolts get torqued to spec in the correct sequence.
Sequence and torque matter more here than people expect. Valve covers — especially plastic and magnesium ones — warp easily. Run them down out of order or too tight and the new gasket leaks straight away, which is why this job so often gets done twice.
If the plug wells are full of oil, the plugs and coil boots come out and get inspected. Oil-soaked coil boots track voltage to ground and cause misfires that people chase for months as an ignition problem when the actual cause is the gasket.

How urgent is a valve cover leak?
Not an emergency, but do not leave it for a year. Oil dripping onto a hot exhaust manifold is a real fire risk, and oil sitting in the plug wells will eventually give you misfires and ruin coil packs.
Will this fix my oil consumption?
If the gasket is the leak, yes. But oil can also be consumed internally through worn valve seals or rings, which produces no external leak at all. I will confirm where it is actually going before replacing parts.
Should I replace the spark plugs at the same time?
If the wells had oil in them, yes — and the coil boots too if they are swollen or soft. The plugs are already coming out for the job, so the extra labour is minimal.
How long does it take?
One to three hours depending on the engine. A four-cylinder with an accessible cover is quick. A transverse V6 where the rear bank sits against the firewall takes considerably longer because the intake usually has to come off.
