Timing Belts in Sacramento

On an interference engine, a snapped belt means the pistons hit the valves and the repair stops being a belt and becomes a cylinder head. This is the one maintenance item where being late is genuinely catastrophic rather than merely expensive.

Timing belt

I replace timing belts along with the tensioner, idler pulleys and — on the great majority of engines — the water pump, because it is driven by the same belt and the labour to reach it is already done. Replacing a belt and leaving a 120,000-mile pump behind it means paying the entire job twice when the pump leaks a year later.

Cam and crank timing gets set to the manufacturer's marks and then rechecked by hand-rotating the engine through two full revolutions before anything is buttoned up. A tooth out will run rough, throw a code, or not start at all — checking it costs ten minutes and is not optional.

Seals behind the covers get inspected while everything is apart. A weeping cam or crank seal will contaminate the new belt and destroy it, and that access will not be open again for another 100,000 miles.

What the job includes

  • Timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley replacement
  • Water pump replaced at the same time where it is belt-driven
  • Cam and crank seal inspection, replaced if weeping
  • Thermostat and coolant replaced where the job requires draining
  • Cam and crank timing verified through two full engine rotations
  • Serpentine belt replaced while access is open

Timing Belts questions

Does my engine have a timing belt or a timing chain?

Many modern engines use a chain, which is generally lifetime. Give me your year, make, model and engine and I will confirm which you have and what the interval is — there is no point paying for a job your vehicle does not need.

Is my engine an interference engine?

Common interference engines include many Honda and Acura V6s, Audi and VW four-cylinders, and a number of Subaru and Mitsubishi engines. On those, a failed belt bends valves. I will tell you which category yours falls into.

Why replace the water pump too?

Because it is driven by the timing belt on most of these engines, so it is already exposed. The pump itself is a modest part cost against the several hours of labour to get back in there. Doing them together is standard practice for good reason.

Can this really be done in a driveway?

Yes, on most vehicles. It is a longer job — typically most of a day — and it needs a level surface and decent access to the front of the engine. Send me the vehicle details and I will confirm before booking.

Need timing belts?

Call or text and describe the problem. If you can, send a photo — it usually tells me more than a paragraph does. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
